Το Hellenic American College σε συνεργασία με την Ελληνοαμερικανική Ένωση και το Institute of Ideas του Λονδίνου παρουσιάζει την Παρασκευή 4 Οκτωβρίου στις 19:30 την, ανοικτή για το κοινό, συζήτηση με τίτλο From the Iliad to the iPad: The future of books and readers (Από την Ιλιάδα στο iPad: Το μέλλον του βιβλίου και των αναγνωστών). Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιείται στην αγγλική γλώσσα.

Από το κλείσιμο του βιβλιοπωλείου της Εστίας τον Μάρτιο του 2013, στην αυξανόμενη εμπορική δύναμη του Amazon και την διάδοση των e-readers, το βιβλίο, τα βιβλιοπωλεία αλλά και οι αναγνώστες βρίσκονται σε περίοδο αλλαγών και προκλήσεων. Μήπως πρέπει να πάψουν να μας απασχολούν οι πωλήσεις των βιβλίων και να
εστιάσουμε στα βιβλία τα οποία διαβάζονται και συζητούνται; Η ψηφιακή εποχή υποσκάπτει τελικά την ουσιαστική γνώση και την έρευνα ή διευρύνει τους ορίζοντές μας; Έχουμε, λανθασμένα, προσδώσει μεγαλύτερη βαρύτητα στα αρνητικά επακόλουθα των νέων τεχνολογιών ή όντως είναι αναντικατάστατη η ενδεχόμενη απώλεια χώρων πολιτισμού, όπως τα βιβλιοπωλεία και οι βιβλιοθήκες;

To Institute of Ideas είναι φόρουμ που δημιουργήθηκε το 2000 προωθώντας την ελεύθερη σκέψη και την ζωντανή ανταλλαγή ιδεών γύρω από φλέγοντα κοινωνικά ζητήματα. Η πρωτοβουλία ξεκίνησε αρχικά από μεμονωμένα άτομα, όπως σπουδαστές, ακαδημαϊκούς, καθηγητές οι οποίοι πραγματοποίησαν τις συναντήσεις τους προκειμένου να παρουσιάσουν νέες ιδέες, να συζητήσουν τρέχοντα θέματα και να βρουν τρόπους για να ενισχύσουν και να προβάλλουν τις θεματικές τους.

From the Iliad to the iPad: The future of books and readers

The Hellenic American Union, in collaboration with the Hellenic American College and the London Institute of Ideas, presents a panel discussion about the future of books on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 19:30. The discussion is open to the public and will be held in English as part of the international series of debates entitled Battle of Ideas.

Amidst events such as the shutting down of Estia bookstore in March 2013, the increasing market share of online stores such as Amazon and the growing popularity of e-readers, traditional books, bookstores and readers are going through a period of transition and challenges. Should we stop worrying about book sales and start focusing on what kind of books are being read and talked about? Does the digital age undermine true knowledge and human inquisitiveness or is it widening our horizons? Are we shortsightedly overemphasizing certain negative aspects of the new technologies or is there indeed something to mourn about in view of the possible extinction of cultural spaces such as bookshops and libraries?

Since its inception in the year 2000, the Institute of Ideas has served as a forum of free thinking and a vigorous exchange of ideas regarding critical or controversial social issues of our times. Starting out as simple meetings between individual students, professors and intellectuals, these events were commended for daring to ask difficult questions and for inviting panelists to speak outside of their professional roles. Their success proved the widespread thirst for a lively constructive debate. Freed from the constraints of demands for practical policy, participants become true creative thinkers.
